University of Brigant Adds a Full Incident-Response Lab to the MSc Cybersecurity
The MSc Cybersecurity at University of Brigant has a new final component: a graded incident-response lab. Students are given a simulated environment, a breach in progress, and a fixed number of hours to detect it, contain it, preserve evidence, communicate with stakeholders and write a report a board could act on.
The exercise is scheduled in windows across time zones so that a student in Kigali or Addis Ababa is not running a simulated breach at 3 a.m. The scenario, the scoring rubric and the time budget are the same for everyone.
"A security master's that ends with a written exam tests whether you can describe an incident," said the module lead. "This tests whether you can run one. Those are different skills, and employers know it."
The taught programme leading into the lab covers network security and defensive architecture, identity and cryptography, offensive security and testing, governance, risk and compliance, and security policy. The incident-response lab pulls all of it together under pressure.
